Alan Richmond is a self-taught painter living and working in the Scottish Borders. Born in Welwyn, Hertfordshire in 1960, he moved to Hawick in 1969 and has been rooted there ever since. From his studio at WASPS Selkirk, he has been painting seriously for over a decade, developing a distinctive practice that is widely exhibited across Scotland.

(Top to Bottom) Landscape 518, 520, 521, 519
Richmond’s semi-abstract landscapes are inspired by the Highlands and Islands of Scotland, as well as the evocative textures found in weathered boats and abandoned buildings. Rather than offering literal depictions, his paintings aim to capture the essence of place - images that are suggested, atmospheric, and open to the imagination of the viewer.

Towards Jura
Working primarily in acrylic, he layers, scrapes, and experiments with colour to create surfaces that mirror the slow processes of weathering and time. Just as these marks in the landscape reveal themselves gradually, Richmond’s paintings invite the viewer to take time, absorb, and uncover what lies beneath.
