Douglas Hamilton is an oil landscape painter from Scotland’s Ayrshire coast. Inspired from an early age by the ever-changing light over the islands of the Firth of Clyde, he began experimenting with oil painting in his teens.
Calm Evening, North Berwick, oil on board, 25 × 20 cm
With a longstanding admiration for the Impressionists and their ability to capture fleeting light and atmosphere, Hamilton developed a practice rooted in plein air painting. This method - working directly outdoors rather than in the studio - remains central to his work, enabling him to translate the transient qualities of light, colour, and mood into finished works.

Having lived and painted in several European countries, Hamilton now works from his base in Edinburgh. His paintings, shaped by a deep connection to place and an immediacy of observation, reflect both the discipline of plein air tradition and a personal response to the landscapes around him.
