Eleanor Cunningham is an artist based in Dunbar, on the east coast of Scotland. Her paintings explore themes of belonging, regeneration, and our connection to the natural world.
She is drawn to the way places carry traces of time, and how layers of earth, rock, fabric, paper, and mark-making can hold both personal and collective histories. Working in mixed media, Eleanor combines techniques including printmaking, collage, abstract mark-making, textiles, and cold wax to create work that reflects the textures and transitions of the landscape around her.
Having lived in Scotland for most of her life, Eleanor finds constant inspiration in its ever-changing scenery. The expansive skies and patchwork fields of East Lothian are a recurring presence in her work - a dialogue with this landscape, reflecting the transformation of fields from rugged browns to a sea of green grasses and cabbages - a meditation on time, season, and renewal.
Eleanor’s background in printed textiles continues to influence her approach to composition and surface. She studied Textile Design at the Scottish College of Textiles, graduating in 1999, and has recently completed a Master’s in Fine Art at Falmouth University.
