Jackie Hunter | Ceramic Artist

Jackie Hunter | Ceramic Artist

Jackie Hunter is a ceramic artist based near the coast in East Lothian, Scotland. Working primarily in handbuilt porcelain, she creates delicate, tactile forms inspired by the textures, patterns, and organic shapes of the sea.

Jackie’s work explores the contrasts found along the shoreline—natural, raw white exteriors paired with vibrant, glossy interior glazes that evoke the shifting colours and light of coastal landscapes. Each piece is designed to be as pleasing to hold as it is to look at, inviting a sense of calm connection to the natural world.

She first discovered ceramics through evening classes at the Poldrate Arts & Crafts Centre in Haddington, where she quickly fell in love with the meditative process of working with clay. Today, she creates her ocean-inspired pieces in her studio in Cockenzie, just a short walk from the sea.

A hand-builder by practice, Jackie shapes each vessel individually, letting the clay guide the process. She works mainly with paper porcelain clay, whose fine fibres provide strength and flexibility during construction. These fibres burn away in the kiln, leaving behind a refined porcelain surface ready for glazing.

Jackie embraces the gentle unpredictability of porcelain - how thin forms shift and settle in the kiln, and how glazes interact to produce unique, often surprising results. Her pieces capture the spirit of the Scottish coastline: fluid, textural, and quietly expressive.
