Jill Hodge is a fine art printmaker based in Cramond, Edinburgh, where she works from her fully equipped printmaking studio, a converted garage that has become the heart of her creative practice. Combining multiple printmaking processes - including etching, screen printing, monotype, and photopolymer - she creates small editions of unique landscape prints. Her distinctive approach involves building images through multiple layers of transparency, texture, line, and colour, resulting in works that capture the shifting moods of land and seascapes.
Born in Dumfries, South West Scotland in 1977, Jill studied Fine Art Printmaking at Loughborough University, graduating with a BA (Hons) in 1999. After completing her degree, she returned to Edinburgh, where she became an active member of Edinburgh Printmakers, producing numerous prints and commissions. From 2002 to 2007, Jill lived in the United Arab Emirates, where she was a founding member of the first Fine Art school in the Gulf Peninsula at the University of Sharjah. As Head of the Printmaking Department, she was responsible for the design and development of a state-of-the-art printmaking workshop, laying the foundations for contemporary printmaking in the region.
Jill’s work is inspired by the transience of light, weather, and seasonal colour across diverse landscapes—from the coastlines of East Lothian to the Yorkshire Moors, and the desertscapes of the Middle East. Her prints are characterised by layered colour, mark-making, and textural depth, which together evoke atmosphere, movement, and the sense of awe she experiences in nature.
Her practice extends beyond her own work to teaching and sharing her passion for printmaking. Jill offers small, welcoming workshops designed for all levels of experience, where participants can discover the joy and versatility of printmaking in an intimate, creative environment.
Both in her prints and paintings, Jill explores themes of time, change, and decay, using colour and layering to capture the strength and resilience of the landscape alongside its ephemeral qualities. Through this balance, her work expresses a profound connection to place and a personal visual language that resonates with viewers.
