Sarah Ross-Thompson is a Fine Art Printmaker based on the south-west coast of Scotland, where her studio overlooks the Irish Sea towards Belfast. Specialising in hand-inked collagraph prints, she constructs her collage printing plates from tactile, everyday materials - string, salt, corrugated card, porridge oats, and lichen - transforming humble textures into richly atmospheric landscapes.
Born in London in 1965 and raised in Norfolk, Sarah’s creative path began after a first career in English and Classics, and later, as a mother in Dorset. Encouraged by tutor Minna Harvey, she enrolled at Bournemouth and Poole College of Art and Design, graduating with distinction in 1997. A year later, her first solo exhibition as part of the City of London Festival of Arts launched her professional practice, allowing her to purchase her first etching press and set up a home studio.
Entirely self-taught beyond her foundation training, Sarah has developed a recognisable personal style over more than two decades. Her work captures the textures and moods of the British landscape, shaped by years spent in Dorset, Argyll, and now Dumfries and Galloway - each move offering a new perspective on light, form, and place.
Travel has also played a key role in her artistic development, from exploring the printmaking heartlands of Mexico and Australia to exchanging ideas with studios around the world. Throughout, her work remains deeply rooted in a sense of place — inspired by the patterns of nature, the craftsmanship of rural life, and the enduring relationship between texture and memory.
