Seth creates a distinctive collection of automata and sculpture inspired by the sea and the British coastline. His work is made primarily from driftwood, reclaimed timber, recycled tin cans, and fragments of flotsam and jetsam gathered from the shore. Every piece is entirely handmade, including the intricate automata mechanisms, which are constructed largely from reclaimed wood and metal. Seth does not use computer software in the development of these mechanisms; instead, each is carefully refined through experimentation, intuition, and trial and error.
Growing up on the east coast, Seth spent countless days immersed in the character of the seaside - crabbing at Walberswick Harbour, building sandcastles on Southwold Beach, and paddling in the bitterly cold North Sea. The backdrop of weathered fishing boats, beach huts, and fishermen’s sheds left a lasting impression and continues to inform the aesthetic of his work today.
After moving to Cardiff for university, his fascination with beachcombing evolved further. Drawn to pieces of driftwood marked by peeling paint and rusted patina, Seth began exploring coastal themes through playful ceramic boats and sculptural forms inspired by the shoreline.
This fascination with reclaimed materials gradually became central to his practice. Combining found objects with hand-built mechanisms, Seth creates works that capture both the whimsy of the British seaside and the quiet beauty of age, erosion, and repair. Alongside these nostalgic influences, his more recent work increasingly reflects the natural drama of the coastline itself - rugged cliffs, expansive beaches, and the rich variety of marine life found along the shore.
