Rachel Ashcroft | Contemporary Woodworker

From her workshop in rural Dumfries and Galloway in south-west Scotland, Rachel, known as Woman of the Woods, creates unique wooden furniture and objects using locally sourced timber shaped by the surrounding landscape.

Originally trained as a fine artist before retraining in woodworking, Rachel approaches each piece as a one-of-a-kind sculptural object. Her work is guided by the natural character of the wood itself, with grain, texture, and organic form playing a central role in the final design.

All of the timber she uses is sourced directly from the local area, much of it storm-felled, diseased, or naturally fallen hardwood that has been carefully air dried. This close relationship with the land and material is an important part of her practice, grounding the work in both sustainability and place.

Rachel’s process begins with the timber available to her. Each plank becomes the starting point for discovering how best to reveal its individual qualities and transform it into an object to be used, lived with, and appreciated in the home.

One of the most rewarding stages of the process for Rachel is planing the raw timber — gradually uncovering the grain, markings, and character hidden beneath the surface, and beginning to understand what the piece might become.
